Snow arrives early at BC Children's Hospital

Virtual snowball fight will raise funds for critical needs at the hospital, help kids get back to being kids.

NOVEMBER 13, 2018 - VANCOUVER, BC - Everyone loves a good snowball fight. Waking up in the morning to a blanket of snow, and the excitement of a day off from school. The thrill of forming the perfect snowball, and landing a direct hit. The camaraderie and fun brings back warm memories of cold days for many of us. But for the children at BC Children’s Hospital, snow days may be spent indoors this year, and childhood memories put on hold. BC Children’s Hospital Foundation wants to help get kids back to being kids, and has launched the Big BC Snowball Fight for Kids to raise funds for critical needs at the hospital.

Today at BC Children’s Hospital, the largest virtual snowball fight in the province was launched with a snowball tossed by 3-year-old, Thariq. Surrounded by patient families and health care providers, friendly snowballs were tossed to kick-off the province’s biggest virtual snowball fight. The event was especially meaningful for families who may be spending the holidays at the hospital, instead of at home.

"Last holiday season, Thariq was very ill and undiagnosed at that point. Cancer was attacking his tiny body and we didn't even know it," said Thariq's mom Shawna. "He's been through so much in the  past year, and we are very thankful to BC Children's Hospital and the work they have put into healing our son. The snow is our favourite place to be. We build giant snowballs the kids can climb, we decorate snowmen, and have some pretty epic snowball fights. Cancer or not, this year will be no different."

Every donation made from November 13, 2018 - January 6, 2019 will translate into one snowball that’s thrown. And like any good snowball fight, it’s more fun when people join in. The Big BC Snowball Fight for Kids is hoping for white-out conditions in offices, across social media platforms, and at participating retail locations.

“If you’re already thinking about donating to BC Children’s Hospital, this is a fun, meaningful way to make a difference this year,” said Teri Nicholas, President & CEO of BC Children’s Hospital Foundation. “Coworkers can get together to hold a snowball fight in the office, shoppers can make a donation at participating retailers, and friends can challenge each other to share a holiday memory on social media and donate online. We’ve set our sights high for BC’s kids - our goal is to see 10,000 snowballs thrown - and we need your help to get there.”
