  •  BC Children’s Hospital is the only children’s Hospital in the province, serving a population of close to one million children in BC and the Yukon
  • Only BC Children's Hospital has the critical mass of expertise required to treat children with serious injury or critical illness, including those with chronic and complex conditions. No other hospital in the province has pediatric subspecialists in areas including oncology, cardiology, neurology, orthopedics, nephrology, respirology and infectious diseases, among others.
  • BC Children's is a teaching and research hospital, providing benefits to children and families available only in a handful of Canadian children's hospitals with clinical care, research and education programs.
  • As a leading Canadian children's hospital, BC Children's is the site many firsts in Canadian pediatric medicine, ensuring BC's children benefit from innovation that originates locally and globally.
  • One size does not fit all – We need a variety of types and sizes of equipment to meet the medical needs of young patients who range in size from that of a soda-can-sized infant to that of a fully grown adult. Smaller bodies have less blood volume, which means a child’s blood pressure can drop much faster than an adult’s, even before the monitoring equipment designed for an adult registers any danger.
  • We have to act fast – Speed is of the essence in children’s medicine. Because a child has a faster metabolism than an average adult, infections can take hold faster. Quick diagnosis and treatment save children’s lives.
  • Medications and treatments that work well for adults are not always safe for children. The hormones at work in a teenager’s body, for example, mean their body chemistry is different than that of an adult; medicines that help grown-ups may cause adverse reactions in kids.
  • The Foundation’s role is to raise funds to support the needs in improving child health, provide education and raise awareness, etc. Foundation supports BC Children’s Hospital, Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children and the Children & Family Research Institute.
