Lindsey Lourenco

Tony was touched by what he saw on a tour of BC Children's Hospital and he was reminded how thankful he and his wife, Darlene, were that their 12-year-old twin daughters, Lindsey and Sadie, had always been healthy. A few weeks later, he and his family left on a much-anticipated trip to Portugal.

Upon arrival, Lindsey became sick and over the course of their holiday she developed an unusually high fever and lost an alarming amount of weight. Tests at a local hospital confirmed the family's worst nightmare. Lindsey had cancer and needed to begin treatment immediately.

Tony recalled his tour of BC Children's Hospital's Oncology Unit just a few weeks earlier and he knew it was where his daughter needed to be.

After two long years of chemotherapy at Children's, Lindsey's health began to improve but her battle wasn't over yet. Subsequent tests revealed devastating news that her cancer had returned. This time Lindsey would need a bone marrow transplant to save her life. With no suitable matches found in the family an anonymous donor was needed.

The next 10 months were painful and the side effects numerous, but Lindsey's health steadily improved. With her cancer now in remission, she looks forward to graduating high school and inspired by those who have helped her becoming a pediatric nurse someday.

This past January, Lindsey's cancer returned. Lindsey and her family, along with her care team at BC Children's Hospital, are once again in the fight against leukemia.
