Doctors at BC Children’s Hospital get pelted with snowballs by their patients—all to help more kids like them

Second annual Snowball Fight for Kids campaign raises critical funds

Some had a small group of kids huddled together, joined by their common experience of being at the hospital. Some had endured chemotherapy; others had undergone multiple surgeries. But for a brief moment, these kids forgot where they were as they gleefully threw one snowball after another. For a brief moment, they were just kids.

On November 19, these kids at BC Children’s Hospital rose to a challenge they were more than happy to take on—throwing as many snowballs as they could at their doctors, while their families amusingly looked on. This challenge officially launched the second annual Snowball Fight for Kids Campaign, a BC-wide virtual snowball fight powered by online donations.

Anyone can take part in the campaign from November 19, 2019 through January 6, 2020, which is as easy as making an online donation at snowballfightforkids.ca. Each donation made represents a virtual snowball thrown.

“The holidays represent a season of hope, but for many kids, their holidays are spent at the hospital. It’s for them that we’ve launched Snowball Fight for Kids, which was inspired by our goal to help kids get back to being kids.”

“The holidays represent a season of hope, but for many kids, their holidays are spent at the hospital. It’s for them that we’ve launched Snowball Fight for Kids, which was inspired by our goal to help kids get back to being kids,” said Teri Nicholas, President and CEO of BC Children’s Hospital Foundation. “The community support we receive during the holidays from this campaign helps to transform lives of kids and families at the hospital—which is why we need your help reaching this year’s goal of 30,000 virtual snowballs.”

“Initiatives like the Snowball Fight for Kids directly fund research and vital equipment so the hospital can meet the unique needs of pediatric patients across the province. It’s somehow perfect that the opportunity to help these kids is associated with the quintessential childhood joy of a snowball fight,” said Dr. Cindy Verchere, head of the BC Children’s Division of Plastic Surgery. “Being here today watching these kids have fun at their doctors’ expense (and with such good aim!) really brought a smile to my face. And our hope is that the Snowball Fight for Kids campaign will help us bring smiles to even more kids.”
