Funds to support Oncology Inpatient Unit in new Hospital

May 13, 2010 - Vancouver, BC - The 2010 For Children We Care Dinner, held on May 8 at the Vancouver Convention Centre, raised $643,855 for BC Children's Hospital. The annual gala was organized by members of the Chinese-Canadian community and was attended by over 780 people. Funds raised will go to Operation Superhero - a three-year, $5-million fundraising initiative of BC's Chinese-Canadian community to support the construction of the Oncology Inpatient Unit in the new BC Children's Hospital.

Dr. and Mrs. Hilary and Patsy Hui, long-time supporters of BC Children's Hospital Foundation, donated $100,000 at the event. "BC Children's Hospital is very dear to our hearts, and we hope our donation will help motivate others to also leave a legacy for kids in BC," said Patsy Hui. The Huis' plea was immediately effective, as Winnie Chung, a realtor, also announced her decision to donate $100,000.

"The Chinese-Canadian community has always been one of our most generous groups of supporters," said Sue Carruthers, president and CEO of BC Children's Hospital Foundation." In the past 14 years, For Children We Care has raised over $7.5 million for the Hospital. I am thrilled that the community is stepping up and showing such great support for Operation Superhero."

Today, the survival rate for childhood cancer exceeds 80 per cent. Although more children are surviving cancer than ever before, cancer still kills more children in North America than any other disease. The new Oncology Inpatient Unit will provide an environment designed to meet the highly specialized needs of children fighting cancer.

"I feel proud to be part of a community that cares so much about the health of our children," said Ludia Li, chair of the 2010 For Children We Care organizing committee. "The help from our donors, volunteers and sponsors has been tremendous. I am grateful for their overwhelming support."

Funds raised during Operation Superhero will go to the Campaign for BC Children, a $200-million fundraising initiative in support of the construction of a new BC Children's Hospital, the relocation of developmental and rehabilitation services to the hospital's Oak Street site, and the improvement of access to quality pediatric care across the province.
