RBC MAKES $2-MILLION GIFT
TO SUPPORT THE CAMPAIGN FOR BC CHILDREN
Gift to support children and youth with mental health challenges
Vancouver - April 14, 2009 - BC Children's Hospital Foundation announced today that RBC has made a $2-million donation to the Campaign for BC Children. The gift will be used to support BC children, youth and families coping with mental health challenges.
"RBC, its employees and clients have long supported BC Children's Hospital," said Graham MacLachlan, regional president, British Columbia, RBC. "The Campaign for BC Children is an opportunity for us to support children and families across the province and recognize the great importance of addressing mental health challenges early in life."
Since 1986, RBC, its foundation, employees and clients have contributed $7.7 million to BC Children's Hospital, including the gift to the campaign.
"Early detection and treatment of mental health problems in children is a key to enabling them to grow up to be healthy adults and productive members of society," said Sue Carruthers, president and CEO of BC Children's Hospital Foundation. "RBC's desire to tackle mental health issues shows vision and compassion and is a perfect fit with our campaign goal of ensuring all of BC's kids have access to the care they need."
Priorities of the Campaign for BC Children include construction of a new hospital - including an Emergency Department, Diagnostics and Imaging, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Operating Suites and patient rooms; the relocation of childhood development and rehabilitation services from Sunny Hill Health Centre in East Vancouver to the Oak Street home of BC Children's, and Child Health BC, a BC Children's Hospital initiative that is building pediatric care capacity throughout the province.
Construction of the new Children's Hospital will provide urgently needed space for critical care. For example, the current operating rooms are antiquated and do not have adequate space to accommodate the high tech equipment required for complex surgical procedures. Patient rooms in the existing hospital were not built to accommodate family members or provide the healing environment children need for quicker recovery.
BC Children's Hospital Foundation launched the Campaign for BC Children exactly one year ago, when Premier Gordon Campbell announced provincial government support for the plan to rebuild the hospital and relocate Sunny Hill. To date, BC Children's Hospital Foundation has received campaign donations from thousands of British Columbians in 223 BC communities. The community has contributed $82 million to date toward the $200-million campaign.
The Campaign for BC Children is calling on British Columbians to "Be a Superhero" for BC's children by making a donation to the campaign. Donations can be made online at www.beasuperhero.ca calling 604-333-5417 or toll-free at 1-877-977-HERO (4376).
