September 28, 2009 - Vancouver, BC - The results are in and the Overwaitea Food Group's 14th annual "Classic Fore Kids" golf tournament raised $733,000 - a new record for a golf tournament held in support of BC Children's Hospital Foundation.

The money raised goes towards Child Health BC, and initiative of BC Children's Hospital aimed at ensuring children across BC have access to a consistent standard of specialized pediatric care, ideally close to their homes. The Overwaitea Food Group became Child Health BC's lead benefactor when it pledged $20 million in support in January 2007.

"The Overwaitea Food Group, its team members, customers and suppliers have shown an amazing commitment to child health year after year," said Sue Carruthers, president and CEO of BC Children's Hospital Foundation. "The work they do on behalf of BC kids is already having an impact on the lives of children and families in Northern BC, in the Interior and on Vancouver Island through Child Health BC."

The tournament was attended by close to 350 guests, including hundreds of representatives from the grocery industry who came together to support the tournament through sponsorships and by participating in fundraisers throughout the day.

Child Health BC is a network of health authorities and health-care providers dedicated to excellence in the care of infants, children and youth in British Columbia. Since 2007 it has supported the creation of new child health facilities in Nanaimo, Richmond, Vernon and Prince Rupert and has provided education and training opportunities for health-care providers with the goal of increasing pediatric care capacity throughout BC.

About the Overwaitea Food Group
Established in New Westminster, BC in 1915, the Overwaitea Food Group is a leading Western Canadian retail grocery chain. The company currently operates 120 stores under the Save-On-Foods, Overwaitea Foods, PriceSmart Foods, Cooper's Foods, Urban Fare, and Bulkley Valley Wholesale banners, and has more than 16,000 team members across BC and Alberta.

About BC Children's Hospital
BC Children's Hospital is the province's only full-service acute care hospital and serves the one million children living in BC and the Yukon. All children who are seriously ill or injured are referred to Children's Hospital and are either treated at the hospital facility in Vancouver or, with consultation from Children's specialists, in their home community. Last year, more than 72,000 children were treated at Children's Hospital. BC Children's Hospital Foundation received donations from more than 120,000 people last year and had revenues of over $61.3 million. Funds raised by the foundation are used to support BC Children's Hospital, Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children and the Child & Family Research Institute.

About the Campaign for BC Children
Priorities of the $200-million Campaign for BC Children include construction of a new hospital - including an Emergency Department, Diagnostics and Imaging, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Operating Suites and patient rooms; the relocation of childhood development and rehabilitation services from Sunny Hill Health Centre in East Vancouver to the Oak Street home of BC Children's, and Child Health BC, a BC Children's Hospital initiative that is building pediatric care capacity throughout the province.

Construction of the new Children's Hospital will provide urgently needed space for critical care. For example, the current operating rooms are antiquated and do not have adequate space to accommodate the high tech equipment required for complex surgical procedures. Patient rooms in the existing hospital were not built to accommodate family members or provide the healing environment children need for quicker recovery.

BC Children's Hospital Foundation launched the Campaign for BC Children in April 2008, when Premier Gordon Campbell announced provincial government support for the plan to rebuild the hospital and relocate Sunny Hill. To date, BC Children's Hospital Foundation has received campaign donations from thousands of British Columbians in 223 BC communities.
