The Podmore Family Foundation - Building for the future of pediatric care

While David Podmore may not remember his extensive stay in hospital as an infant, the experience impressed upon him a lifelong appreciation for high-quality pediatric health care. In later years, as David and his wife Janice raised their four children, they were always assured that should their children ever need specialized care, BC Children’s Hospital would be there to help them.

As devoted volunteers and supporters of BC Children’s Hospital, the Podmores found it was only natural to contribute to the Campaign for BC Children and, in doing so, the construction of the Teck Acute Care Centre and Child Health BC, an initiative aimed at improving children’s access to specialized care no matter where they live in the province. David, the CEO of Concert Properties and chair of BC Children’s Hospital Foundation’s Board of Directors, has used his knowledge and skills to generate support for the hospital’s redevelopment.

The Podmores also find great joy in meeting young patients and their families, and hearing their stories.

“Witnessing the smiles on the faces of patients and family members who have received care at BC Children’s Hospital makes it a privilege to be involved and to be able to help,” David says.

Recently the Podmore family had first-hand experience with the hospital’s service when David’s youngest grandchild required immediate medical attention for what was thought to be a wasp sting. The toddler had troubles breathing and was taken to Victoria General Hospital, where, in consultation with BC Children’s specialists, attending physicians were able to identify the issue and recommend a course of treatment. The remote consultation was made possible by Child Health BC. Following a minimally invasive procedure and a short stay in hospital, David and Janice’s grandson is now on the mend and at home with his family.

“Child Health BC is important to alleviating the additional stress that families outside the Lower Mainland feel when they are dealing with a seriously ill or injured child,” says David. “The people of BC value access to the best pediatric care possible.”

RBC inspired by employees and clients to make a $10-million difference

For more than 27 years, employees and clients of RBC have shown a deep and abiding compassion for those children and youth from across BC who deal with challenges associated with mental health and wellness, suffer from childhood illnesses, or require life-saving care and procedures.

They’ve taken this commitment to the next level by making a significant pledge toward the Provincial Child and Youth Health Living Initiative. Cumulatively, RBC and its employees have raised over $10 million in support of BC Children’s Hospital.

To date thousands of patients with mental health challenges have benefited from this generosity and many more have been touched by RBC’s support of the Excellence in Child Health Fund.

RBC is dedicated to supporting community-based and hospital programs that facilitate early intervention and increase public awareness of children’s mental health issues, and reduce the stigma associated with mental illness. Mental health issues affect one in five children in the province.

BC Children’s Hospital Foundation is proud to celebrate and recognize RBC for its dedication to making the world a brighter place for children and youth in British Columbia.
