Miracle Makers

National Volunteer Week is April 23–29 — so we want to extend a big thank you to all the volunteers who have donated their time and effort to help raise money for BC Children’s Hospital. We couldn’t provide the care we do without this leadership.

Dan Whalley is one of those volunteers. By day, he’s vice president of personal banking at Prospera Credit Union. In addition, he is the chair of this year’s 30th annual Miracle Weekend. In this role, Dan spearheads the fundraising efforts and inspires a team of more than 50 community and business leaders from a range of industries.

“When a child is sick, their parent’s world becomes very small. I am proud to be working with some of the most talented and dedicated individuals in our province to help give these children and their families the hope and care they need,” Dan said.

Miracle Weekend marks the culmination of hard work by volunteers like Dan and hundreds of others across the province. Tune in to the telethon on Saturday, June 3 to Sunday, June 4 to meet the caregivers and families who rely on this support.

Tanya Lawes is thankful to BC Children’s Hospital and every February she helps kids shine by making cars shine.

“We wanted to do something to give back. February is heart month and we own a car wash, so this was the perfect opportunity for us,” Tanya said.

In 2007, her daughter Layna was born with tricuspid stenosis and a ventricular septal defect. At just six months old, she underwent open-heart surgery and had a pacemaker implanted into her chest. Today, Layna is a bright and bubbly nine-year-old.

As owners of Bridge Street Car Wash in Princeton, they decided that on every Tuesday in February, they would invite the community to get their cars cleaned and then donate that money to BC Children’s Hospital. Since they started the fundraiser in 2010, the Lawes have donated $7,500.
