2015 Nehal 2

Children Speak

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our dear friend Nehal Deo this past February. Nehal was known for his sweet personality, bright smile and energy. Even as he coped with a complex cardiac condition, Nehal brought joy and light to everyone he met, including all of us at BC Children’s Hospital and at the foundation.

Some weeks ago, Nehal wrote a piece about how much he appreciated his care at BC Children’s, and how he enjoyed being the Champion Child at our A Night of Miracles gala. We wanted to honour his memory by sharing his thoughts.

In fond memory of Nehal, a child who lives in our hearts forever.

Hi! My name is Nehal Deo.

Before I was born, my mom found out that there would be some problems with my heart, so by the time I arrived, doctors were ready to take care of me right away.

As I grew up, my mom and dad took awesome care of me and brought me to BC Children’s Hospital many times. I had a cardiac arrest when I was a baby, so the doctors put a stent in my artery to help fix some of the abnormalities in my heart. I’ve been to the hospital so many times since I was little, I have lost count! But along the way, I have met many people who have treated me so well that they feel like friends, even though they’re grown-ups.

My mom and dad and I have done some fun things with BC Children’s Hospital Foundation. Last November I was the Champion Child for the A Night of Miracles gala. We got to dress up and go to a big dinner at a fancy hotel. We watched dancers and a whole bunch of people gave money so the hospital could buy machines like the ones the doctors used during my operations to keep me safe, but these machines were way nicer.

I even got to go up on the stage and I met Harjit Sajjan, our country’s minister of defence. He used to be a soldier in Afghanistan, but he said that I was the courageous one, even braver than him!

I want to thank all the caregivers at BC Children’s Hospital. I really like my doctors – Dr. Hosking, Dr. Campbell and Dr. Seear – and all the nurses are so nice!
