Over 400 guests rose to their feet at BC Children’s Hospital Foundation’s
28th annual Crystal Ball, presented by Beedie Development Group, as emcees Sasa Drover, mother of BC Children's patient, Jack Drover, and Global BC’s Chris Gailus made the unexpected announcement that philanthropist Dr. Djavad Mowafaghian had decided to meet the gala’s fundraising objective by singlehandedly purchasing an EOS imaging machine for the hospital’s Orthopedics Department for $1.4 million. As a result, the gala, which was chaired for the second time by Arya Eshghi, raised a record $2.7 million November 27 at the Four Seasons Hotel Vancouver.

This high-tech X-ray machine will enable the orthopedics team to capture clear and detailed images of children’s entire limbs – the spine, arms or legs – with a single scan and considerably less radiation exposure. The exceptional success of this year’s Crystal Ball, and Dr. Mowafaghian’s decision to buy the EOS imaging machine, means the foundation will also establish an endowment to support the technology needs of the Orthopedics Department.

"For 28 years we’ve been humbled by the generosity of the Crystal Ball guests, and every year something extraordinary happens. This year was no exception,” said Teri Nicholas, president and CEO of BC Children’s Hospital Foundation. “The Orthopedics Department is one of the hospital’s busiest areas, and this support from Dr. Djavad Mowafaghian and many other donors will ensure the orthopedic surgeons, nurses, radiologists and, most importantly, the children we serve will benefit from access to leading-edge technology.

As a donor and governor of BC Children’s Hospital Foundation, Dr. Mowafaghian has inspired the entire community with his generosity, kindness and quiet philanthropy. While his charitable giving in the province is significant, his legacy and the impact he is having on the lives of children and families across Canada are beyond measure.
