Air Canada helps kids in need

This year we are celebrating 20 years of partnership with Air Canada and the Air Canada Foundation through Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

Air Canada Foundation’s Hospital Transportation Program provides Aeroplan Miles to Children’s Miracle Network member hospitals, including BC Children's Hospital, giving children and their parents access to advanced medical treatments in centres unavailable in their community.

Here is a story from just one of the many families helped, right here in BC.

Our family of four had been traveling back and forth since late August from Vancouver, BC to Toronto, ON for a special trial at Sick Kids that was not offered at BC Children's Hospital.  Our son has been fighting stage IV neuroblastoma for nearly 4 years now.  The options for treatment for this rare form of cancer have become limited for our son due to lack of response to standard therapies.  We decided to take on the challenge of the out of province trial with hopes that this would be the treatment to provide results.

The social work team at BC Children’s Hospital worked together to provide tickets for two of the four of us whenever possible.  At times, when we paid out of pocket for flights, the cost was over $1,000 one way from Vancouver to Toronto.  It was a great relief to me and my husband that Air Canada was able to assist our family with some of these travel expenses.  Worry over finances and how to afford the next trip for our son's treatment took away focus from where it needed to be.  When we knew some of the costs would be defrayed we were able to instead focus our resources on keeping our young man comfortable and relatively happy while undergoing difficult weeks in Toronto.

There are many things that weigh on a parent when dealing with neuroblastoma.  Treatment options and how to afford every opportunity available to save their child's life can be all consuming.  With the help of Air Canada, we were able to concentrate on what matters the most, our son and our family.

Help us do even more for sick children and donate your Aeroplan Miles today! Air Canada Foundation website.
