This is Emily. She is a little sister to a proud older sister, Ellie-Marie, and the apple of her parents’ eye.
When early ultrasounds showed complications with Emily's development in utero, her mom, Marilou, and father, Michael, were determined that, whatever Emily's issues would be, they'd face them together as a family and with the support of a community of health providers.
Emily spent the first 14 days of her life in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, first in Abbotsford, then at BC Children's Hospital, has been since diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy and a seizure disorder, and has endured several shunt surgeries. Despite all that she has gone through in her young life, her mom says, “she is the happiest most determined child…she loves Abbotsford Recreation Center preschool and Matsqui Recreation Center swimming...being with her community friend”
Her care is far from over. She will need the support of BC Children’s Hospital and her local health care community, but she is progressing with her milestones and her parents are grateful for the care she’s received.
“We cannot give Dr. Cochrane (her neurosurgeon) and Dr. Steinbok enough praise for their wonderful work...thank you Dr. Matsuba, for seeing Emily's potential”
