Extra Life 24-hour Gaming Marathon

To the outsider, gamers often appear to play in small groups or in isolation. In reality they form a huge community, often collaborating with individuals across town and around the world. On Saturday, November 7, over 600 BC gamers are taking this community activity one step further - they will come together and play games on and offline, in support of the kids at BC Children's Hospital.

Last year, 778 gamers from across the province raised $130,993! This is a huge growth, and almost doubled the 2014 event total. Funds raised here in BC support urgently needed medical equipment and research, benefiting children and families in BC and around the world.

What is Extra Life?

Extra Life began in 2008 as a way of honouring Texas Children’s Hospital patient, Tori Enmon, who lost her battle with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) at the young age of 15. Tori inspired the video gaming community and word quickly spread throughout North America. Today, Extra Life is organized by Children’s Miracle Network and allows gamers to play any game of their choice, including board games, to raise funds for their local children’s hospital. Each gamer is asked to raise a minimum of $100 through pledges from family, friends and their online community.

What is an Extra Life Guild?

Extra LifeGuilds are a new initiative piloted last year in four cities across the US to help spread the word about the Extra Life marathon. Essentially, a guild consists of a group of passionate Extra Lifers who want to get more involved and help strengthen the Extra Life community on a local level. Each Guild is expected to meet once a month to find ways to help grow the Extra Life movement. Guild members will have the opportunity to attend local gaming industry events and conferences, chat with other elite members of the Extra Life community and learn how their donations are making a difference in the lives of patients and families in BC and the Yukon. Find out more about Vancouver's Guild by following @YVRExtra_Life on Twitter.

How can I get involved on November 7?

The 6th annual Extra Life event’s National Game Day takes place from Saturday, November 7, at 6 am PST to 7 am PST on Sunday, November 8. Gamers register at and can solicit pledges from their friends and family members.  You can stream the live feeds through each gamer’s page, or the Electronic Arts team (17 participants!) will be streaming live from their offices on Twitch.

Don't want to take part in the marathon? Pledge someone supporting BC Children's Hospital instead! For example, BC Children's Hospital Foundation employee Aaron Hui is doing a great job fundraising!

Event activities kick off on Monday, October 26 at the Microsoft stores in Metropolis and Pacific Centre from 6:00pm to 9:00pm, as they launch the new Halo 5: Guardians.

You can also join the conversation online – donate and tweet to win awesome prizes!
