Floor 8: Oncology/Hematology/Bone Marrow Transplant Program

Currently, the Oncology/Hematology/Bone Marrow Transplant program is housed across three separate floors at BC Children’s. In the new Teck Acute Care Centre, the program will be combined on one floor, ensuring patients are closer to all the resources they need.

The new For Children We Care Oncology Inpatient Unit will include 27 single-patient rooms, each with a washroom and refrigerator for personal use, as well as a bed for a family member or support person. It will also house two bariatric rooms and 16 regular rooms, six of which will be designed and decorated to appeal specifically to teens and adolescents. Because patients receiving treatment for cancer or blood disorders can stay for varied periods – from weeks, months, or even a year – it was important to design comfortable single-patient rooms with access to natural light and space for family members.

The Capstone Mining Corp. Oncology Clinic will provide oncology and hematology care to children and youth on an outpatient basis; the clinic will include 23 single-patient rooms to provide children and families with enhanced privacy.

The procedure room and recovery bay will allow patients scheduled for procedures like bone marrow biopsies and lumbar punctures to have their operations and then recover in the adjacent suite on the same floor.

A dedicated family education room will provide space for caregivers to guide patients and families through complex home care procedures and offer other medically related tutorials. Two play rooms and two teen lounges (one of each in the inpatient and outpatient areas) will provide spaces for fun and recreation. There will also be a quiet room, a family kitchen and lounge, parent showers and laundry facilities to help patients and families who have longer hospital stays.

Outdoor patios will be available on both sides of the eighth floor. Since it will be possible to move patients, beds, IVs and monitors onto the patios, these spaces will be equipped with electrical plugs and amenities so that even patients who are restricted to their beds will be able to spend time outside.

The Oncology floor will include:

·         2 play rooms;

·         2 teen lounges;

·         2 patios;

·         27 single-inpatient rooms;

·         23 single-outpatient rooms;

·         A dedicated satellite pharmacy;

·         Large windows in all patient rooms.
