New Hospital Update

If you’ve been to BC Children’s Hospital in the last few months you will have noticed that the first few floors of the Teck Acute Care Centre are rapidly taking shape. Before construction even began, hospital administrators, caregivers and patient families had provided their input into the building’s design to ensure the new facility is built with children’s and families’ needs in mind and allows caregivers to do their jobs in the most efficient manner possible.

The latest design phase saw the creation of life-sized mock-ups. During a two-week period in March 2015, caregivers walked through these mock-ups of clinical rooms – fitted with real medical equipment, patient beds, light switches, fixtures and more – to test the space and configuration of these features. The mock-ups allowed clinical users to evaluate the real-life model against their expectations.

In May, the construction site welcomed its third and last tower crane George; each of the site’s three cranes was named by children from across BC. In the remaining months of 2015 construction crews will complete the concrete pours up to the eighth floor on the west side of the new building, and up to the sixth floor on the east side of the building.
