Ocean Radiothon for Kids is back!
Over the last 13 years, Victoria radio station Ocean 98.5 has built awareness and raised funds for BC Children’s Hospital. Its efforts have been successful to say the least: to date, the Ocean Radiothon for Kids has raised more than $1.8 million, with each year more successful than the last.
This year’s radiothon will feature Miracle Kids from across Greater Vancouver. Every hour for two days, one Miracle Kid, parent, or doctor will share their story live on air.
You’ll hear from children like Crystal, who’s currently a patient at BC Children’s Hospital. Crystal was diagnosed with leukemia in 2011 and had nearly completed her treatments, when she suffered a relapse in 2014. She then underwent a bone marrow transplant in an extra effort to rid her body of leukemia. Most recently, in September, Crystal fell into a month-long coma from severe sepsis. Today, she’s still fighting. Crystal is proud to share her story and believes people should donate to the hospital. “You never really know what’s going to happen to you or the ones you care about, and people need to help each other,” she says.
You’ll also hear from teens like Mitchell, another patient at BC Children’s. Mitchell visits the hospital every month for treatment of colitis, a severe autoimmune disease. Mitchell’s colitis requires treatment every four to six weeks to keep his body from attacking itself; he will need to follow this treatment regime for the rest of his life. Mitchell says people should donate to BC Children’s Hospital because of the compassion he’s seen from caregivers. “It’s an incredible place that helps so many kids, and everyone is so supportive and really cares about you.”
Shannon is also speaking out in support of BC Children’s. Her son, Andrew, underwent a heart transplant a few years ago; his prognosis at the time was hopeful and positive. But soon afterward, he developed a rare form of lymphoma that is only seen in transplant patients. On top of the lymphoma diagnosis, Andrew is also being tested for an autoimmune disease so rare that it has affected just 200 people worldwide. Shannon’s words resonate with many parents who must deal with a child’s serious illness. “We don’t know tomorrow, but we know today and we need to be able to help the next child who comes through those doors. Andrew wouldn’t be here without BC Children’s Hospital.”
