Last year Simon Fraser University (SFU) took a change on a new fundraising initiative and became the first university in Canada to take part in Dance Marathon - a movement that is huge in the US, with colleges and universities raising over $80 million since the inaugural event in 1991.

Last year BC Children's patient, Casey Wright, attended the event and had a blast! The event, organized by an eight member team from Phi Delta Epsilon, hosted 150 participants and raised just under $11,000 for the hospital. An incredible accomplishment for the university’s first ever dance fundraiser.

This year, the event is picking up momentum and looks to be even more successful. 39 passionate SFU student volunteers are working hard on the 12-hour marathon, which is taking place on January 24. Their goal is to raise $25,000 for BC Children's Hospital through Children's Miracle Network!

A little about the SFU Dance Marathon:

What is Dance Marathon?
Dance Marathon is a student-led event where participants stay on their feet for the duration - but you don’t have to be actively dancing! The 12-hour event will take place Saturday, January 24 at SFU. Sign up, or get more event details, online: http://www.sfudm.com

Does it cost anything to attend?
Registration for SFUDM 2015 is free of charge - no credit card is required to register. However, all participants are asked to raise a minimum of $20 to support BC Children's Hospital.

The easiest way to register is online. Credit cards only, but if you want to pay cash you can pay at the door day of. All the fundraising can be done online as well! So using your social media channels is a great way to promote your participation and get your friends and family to support you.

How many participants are expected?
Last year the event attracted 150 participants. As of January 6, 260 individuals had signed up and the volunteer team encourages even more participation.

Who can attend?
Although this event is focused on the SFU community anyone is welcome! The volunteer team is approaching SFU Burnaby Mountain residents and their families, but would love to see other university students and past alumni. There is no age restriction and there are event kid-friendly activities!

Should we practice our dance skills?
Not needed! There will be tons of awesome activities besides dancing - just set your goal to stay on your feet the entire time. Whether you're the next So You Can Think You Can Dance? winner or have two left feet, we guarantee there will be something fun for you at SFU Dance Marathon.

How can donors and supporters help?
You can register! If you want, you can put together a team of friends or family - the more participants the more fun and the more memorable it will be! The success lies in people coming out and fundraising.

Can’t make it? Donate online to a friend’s page, or just to the event!
