Grace teBoekhorst has a gift from her father, Dennis, that few children receive from their parents – a kidney. In August 2010, then five-year-old Grace had a life-saving kidney transplant surgery at BC Children’s Hospital with Dennis as her organ donor. Grace suffers from an extremely rare disease that damages her kidneys and weakens her immune system. By the time Grace had her transplant she had less than 20 per cent kidney function remaining and was on renal dialysis four days a week.
Today, she is currently going through ongoing treatment for early signs of rejection and still visits the hospital frequently for treatment.
