More than $2.8 million raised at 31st annual Crystal Ball
Vancouver, BC – Over 400 guests helped raise an incredible $2,815,129 at BC Children’s Hospital Foundation’s Crystal Ball last Friday, November 24th. Presented by Beedie Development Group, this year’s Crystal Ball raised funds in support of pediatric mental health. Support from generous donors will launch a revolutionary hospital-wide program to address the impact of pain on mental health of children and youth, expand current mental health programs and bring expertise to underserved communities in BC.
“Only one in every five kids receives the mental health services they need,” said Teri Nicholas, BC Children’s Hospital Foundation President and CEO. “That needs to change, and there is no better time than now. The recent opening of the Teck Acute Care Centre marks a new era of care, for BC’s kids and will heal children in body, mind and spirit. Funds from Crystal Ball will bring vital mental health programs to more children and youth – and in their own communities.”
As the province’s only dedicated pediatric acute care hospital, BC Children’s Hospital sees and treats kids with some of the most severe mental illnesses. Last year, there were more than 15,000 visits from kids who accessed mental health services. Visits included specialized inpatient and outpatient services for kids, youth, and their families, including assessment, individual and group treatment, and Telehealth consultations.
“I was surprised to learn that 70% of mental issues emerge before the age of 17,” said Jennifer Johnston, chair of the Crystal Ball Committee. “As a parent, I want to know that all kids will receive the help they need. We know that early detection is key, and with the funds raised at the Crystal Ball, BC Children’s Hospital will be able to expand its current mental health programs to make sure that kids get the help they need, when they need it.”
Inspired by the healing power of nature, this year’s Crystal Ball invited guests into a spectacular wilderness setting, reflecting the West Coast imagery in the newly opened Teck Acute Care Centre. The forest decor reflected the four pillars of strength, growth, support, and community. The gala was emceed by Chris Gailus and featured a forest-themed four-course dinner prepared by Four Seasons Hotel Vancouver’s Executive Chef, Weimar Gomez. Since its inception, the Crystal Ball has raised closed to $28 million for BC Children’s Hospital.
